MoveMate was founded in Jakarta to address a key challenge in the fitness industry: sustaining motivation. Most fitness apps focus on tracking steps or calories, but they fail to keep users engaged beyond a few weeks. MoveMate flips the model by turning workouts into a social, gamified experience.
The app uses geo-location, AR, and gamification mechanics to create fitness challenges that connect seamlessly with daily life. For example, users might be prompted to “race your colleague to the office,” “compete in a weekend 5K with your community,” or “unlock hidden AR rewards” at local parks when they hit step milestones. Instead of dull charts, users level up avatars, earn points, and win discounts on partner fitness brands.
MoveMate also collaborates with local gyms, running clubs, and healthy cafés to create city-wide leaderboards. This community-driven approach has resulted in viral adoption among young professionals and students, especially in Jakarta and Bandung. In its pilot phase, the app crossed 12,000 downloads in just three months, with a 65% active user rate—much higher than industry averages for fitness apps.
