LumiPhone was born during the pandemic with a clear mission: give every student in India access to online education through an affordable smartphone. While government schemes and large brands provided some relief, millions of children in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities were left behind due to the high cost of devices. LumiPhone created entry-level Android smartphones priced under ₹3,500, optimized for education apps, video calls, and e-learning platforms.

The phones were designed with large screens, long battery life, and pre-installed education bundles in English and regional languages. In its pilot across West Bengal and Bihar, LumiPhone distributed over 3,000 devices through school partnerships, NGOs, and parent groups. Teachers reported that attendance in online classes increased, and students could finally keep pace with their peers.

But today, LumiPhone is barely surviving. Component prices have surged, supply chains demand advance payments, and competitors with deeper pockets have overshadowed their efforts. The team of five founders is operating out of a single small office, struggling to maintain shipments. Without urgent funding, LumiPhone will shut down—leaving behind a powerful but unfinished mission.

Yet, the opportunity is immense: with India’s Digital Bharat initiatives and the growing need for affordable edtech hardware, LumiPhone has the chance to become the go-to device for students nationwide. All it needs is capital and visibility.
